Tips for Making Your Halloween Green
Halloween is a spooky time of year, but it doesn't mean you have to be afraid to help protect and preserve the environment. A few simple tips like having your little ghouls and goblins carry reusable bags for trick or treating to handing out eco-friendly treats can help your family have a safe and enjoyable Halloween.
Cloth shopping bags or pillowcases make wonderful eco-friendly alternatives to plastic bags or those plastic pumpkins we all grew up with using to collect candy at Halloween. Reusable bags are not only better for the environment at Halloween; they keep those nasty plastic bags out of the landfills.
Don’t buy a Halloween costume that your child will only wear one time, instead why not make your own costume out of materials you may already have around the house. You can also find second hand costumes at your local thrift stores or yard sales. Why not swap with a friend to get something new and different to wear. After Halloween is over, you can save it to swap again next year or simply donate it to your charitable organizations.
There is a wide variety of eco-friendly candy, from organic chocolates to organic lollipops, available online and at your local health food stores. Another option is to avoid giving candy and instead give fun useful treats such as colorful pencils, erasers in fun shapes, or any other items that you might find at your local dollar store.
These green tips are not only common sense, but wonderful ways we can teach our children basic strategies to living an eco-friendly lifestyle. By reducing waste and recycling items that you already have, making Halloween Green is a snap!
